Saline de Kervalet

The water does the work. We only decide how fast.

Saline de Kervalet gives a hand-worked salt marsh the one thing a photograph cannot carry: duration. Seawater climbs from 3.5 to 25 degrees Baumé over twenty-one days through sixty clay pans, and the whole site is built so a reader can walk that climb under their own hand.

The premise

When the subject is a process, scroll has to become a control.

A saline has no object at its centre. There is no bench, no finished piece, no moment of making — only seawater slowed down until it gives up salt, and a paludier whose entire skill is timing. Describing that in prose flattens it into a caption.

So the argument is handed to the reader instead. Scroll position maps continuously to the state of one parcel of brine, and every number on screen — salinity, depth, days elapsed — is computed from it. Scrub backwards and the brine dilutes, the rose drains out, the day counter runs down. It reads the same in both directions because it is one function, not an animation.

  1. 01 · Rate

    The instrument teaches what a caption cannot.

    Water gets shallower as it gets stronger — forty centimetres at the tide gate, three in the pan where salt forms. You feel the section drain under your hand, which is why one afternoon finishes a harvest and one shower undoes three weeks.

  2. 02 · Unit

    Every chapter opens on a measurement.

    Each stage announces itself with its real salinity in degrees Baumé and the pond it belongs to — the same number a paludier reads off a hydrometer. It carries position in the process, where a tracked label carries nothing.

  3. 03 · Consequence

    The reader is allowed to ruin the season.

    A two-state weather control puts rain into the marsh. The three-centimetre pan loses far more than the forty-centimetre reservoir, so the asymmetry a paludier actually watches the sky for is something you can cause and then undo.
